My father and I were looking for a project, and now we’ve found one. It’s a 1962 CJ-5, the engine and transmission were sitting where the rear bench should be, and there’s large holes in the floor, but I already love it.

On another note, if anyone has experience with early year CJ’s that would be great because we honestly have no clue what we’re doing at this point.

Something like this is probably a wise investment for starters.

Yeah for sure,it took us several hours just to make sure it was actually a 1962, if the original VIN plate is missing (some even came with just a little sticker on the dash), its nearly impossible to try to find it somewhere else, but we tracked on down stamped into the frame rail and managed to get things figured out.

From the picture it also looks like a candidate to strip it all down and take stock of what you have, what can be reclaimed, and what needs to be replaced. Fortunately those things are pretty simple to work on from modern standards, not quite to a hammer solves all problems but it will get you pretty far.

Yeah we’re planning to do a frame up rebuild of it, and yeah, with a hammer and a crescent wrench you can pretty much take the entire thing apart.

You’re going to have a great time. I redid 3 CJs, but all before the Internet, so I did everything by trial, error, and Haynes manual. You will learn a lot about basic automotive mechanics, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Literally every part is available aftermarket, and the fan support is great if you get stuck..
